Back-to-school season is here, and we want to share a resource to help you kick off the year right: A Playlist of You, a free get-to-know-you activity that gets students reflecting on the songs tied to their memories, friendships, family, and identity.
Through a series of thoughtful prompts – like “a song associated with a positive memory,” “a song first shared with you by an older family member,” and “a song you’d use as your hype song” – students share a little piece of who they are through music. It’s a simple, engaging way to build community in the first weeks of class, spark meaningful conversation, and celebrate the diverse musical backgrounds sitting in your classroom. And because it requires no instruments and minimal setup, it also works well as a substitute lesson plan whenever you need one ready to go.
