Using Music Workshop

Music Workshop’s curriculum is designed to bring the power of music into any classroom—whether you’re a music teacher, a general education teacher, or a substitute stepping in for the day. Flexible and engaging, our lessons work in any learning environment, making it easy to introduce new concepts, explore cultures around the world, enrich existing units, or simply brighten your students’ day with the joy of music.

How can I use the program in my classroom?

Music Workshop is designed to fit seamlessly into your classroom – whether you have five minutes or fifty. With flexible, ready-to-use content, you can bring music learning to life in ways that suit your teaching style, schedule, and students’ needs. You can introduce a new instrument, reinforce a concept, or add a creative break to your routine, Music Workshop makes it easy.

Standalone lesson

Use courses as one-off lessons to explore specific genres or instruments, celebrate world music during heritage months, or provide a change of pace in instruction.

Group courses by topic

Combine courses by topics or themes to create a comprehensive learning experience. Consider pairing strings, brass, percussion, and woodwinds together to create a comprehensive orchestra unit.

Special days

Add variety and fun with a course for a special occasion—whether it’s a rest day after a concert, a treat for meeting class goals, or a cultural celebration.

Exit tickets

Engage students and reinforce key takeaways with Music Workshop activities or Q&As as a wrap-up.

Break up the week

Some teachers use “Music Workshop Wednesday” to bring variety to their students’ schedules.

Introduce or supplement a pre-planned unit or curriculum

Supplemental and flexible plans

Offer extra lessons that fit scheduling needs as needed while building musical knowledge, whether to fill in a gap or keep classes in sync when one is ahead of the others.

10-minute lessons

Use the Fun Facts section of a course video to offer short, engaging content in a bite-sized music lesson.

Substitute plans

Keep students engaged in music learning while you’re away, even with a sub with no music expertise.

How It Works

Each standards-based Music Workshop course features a roughly 25-minute video and, with the added teacher-led components, can be expanded into a full 50-minute lesson plan. These components include Q&A discussions, an active listening exercise, and a movement activity. By integrating music learning with reading, physical activity, active listening, and critical thinking, we not only engage and connect students but also show them how music can play a significant role in their everyday lives.

Extension Activities

Music Workshop courses provide a strong foundation, but learning doesn’t have to stop there. Extension activities help deepen student engagement by building on lesson concepts in creative ways. Teachers can incorporate listening activities, movement exercises, interactive games, or reflection activities to reinforce key ideas. Whether using a Music Workshop Spotify playlist for a “Draw the Mood” exercise or playing a rhythm game, Music Workshop’s extension activities make educating with music even more dynamic and interactive.
